This short demonstration on how sounds are made is ideal for use as a lesson starter in KS3/4 science. A loudspeaker is connected to a sound generator and a glass is placed in front of the loudspeaker. A specific frequency of sound is generated. The volume is then increased until the glass shatters. A slow motion camera is used to record the process. Played back, the video shows the glass shaking and bending, then cracking. The question for students to consider is: Why does the glass break? See the accompanying teachers' notes for a full explanation of the science underpinning the demonstration, plus suggested extension activities.
