Sound Advice' takes a look at a novel and innovative way of giving lesson feedback to teachers. The key problem in giving feedback is that of immediacy. In the old days the system was to have a teacher sitting in the back of the room with a clipboard and then, hours or even days after the lesson, a debrief, says Ray Tarleton, Principal of South Dartmoor Community College. But now the college has developed it's own wireless system with headsets and microphones to give instant feedback that can affect the course of the lesson as it is in progress. It means that the teacher is a bit like a learner driver sitting in a car, with dual controls. They are not actually driving the car entirely on their own, they are being guided as they work. Ray estimates that his new teachers reach their performance level several months earlier than they would have under the old system.
