Petula Allen, headteacher and former mathematics adviser, and Gary Clapperton review Gary's lesson on geometry with Year 6. Petula has some reservations about the use of pupil photographs where perspective may have caused some problems, but is impressed at the children's positive response to images they have taken themselves. Petula reflects on how useful the whiteboard was during Gary's lesson and they look in detail at how it enhanced his explanation of ratio. Both agree that the way the shapes could be moved and re-sized in proportion was an especially effective use of ICT. The whiteboard became a powerful motivational tool as the children wanted to use it to demonstrate to the whole class. Petula questions the regimented rows of desks and Gary defends this setup for his whiteboard based lesson. They discuss the common difficulty of getting children to estimate angles accurately. Some of the 'real life' shapes had the disadvantage that they did not give clear delineation.
