In 2008, over 45,000 UK school children stuck black paper with eye-slits on classroom windows, put up bird posters, borrowed binoculars, made bird feeders out of old plastic bottles, and counted the numbers and species of birds they spotted in their school grounds. As well as helping the RSPB assess the health of the nation's bird population, it also provides a general theme upon which to base many classroom activities, which can engage students in maths, literacy and ICT, and make learning a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
