We visit Medway in Kent, where 60 out of 63 schools are already delivering a modern foreign language, as they continue to build capacity to meet the Government's 2010 deadline for every child at KS2 to have the opportunity to learn a foreign language. We find out how the local authority is adapting the KS2 Framework to support its non-specialist workforce, and take a snapshot of five different primaries - and one secondary school - trying to cope with the challenges of delivering meaningful and progressive language learning in time for 2010. Experiences range from Park Wood Junior School, where progressive language learning is supported by close adherence to the Medway programmes of study and creative timetabling; to Cliffe Woods Primary, where they're trialling a more cross-curricular approach. We hear from Tara Deevoy, Medway's lead languages consultant, and from headteachers, specialist and non-specialist teachers, and the pupils.
