Formative assessment is increasingly seen as underpinning effective teaching and learning. In this programme, Professor Paul Black and Christine Harrison, authors of the influential pamphlet 'Working Inside the Black Box', outline what they see as the key features. They focus on effective questioning, peer and self-assessment, feedback and marking. At Lord Williams School in Oxfordshire, maths teacher Karen Vear and science teacher Jon Ryder assist Paul and Christine with their initial research. By observing their lessons it is possible to explore some of the strategies they have developed to implement formative assessment in the secondary classroom. This programme gives a unique chance to hear Paul Black and Christine Harrison explain why they see formative assessment as key to raising standards. This is combined with an opportunity to see how Karen and John use strategies such as open questioning and effective marking in their own classroom to enhance learning.
