Two secondary schools are tackling the introduction of artistic and intellectual property rights into the KS3 music curriculum. At Monk's Walk School, Hertfordshire, Head of Music Anna Gower invites in songwriters and musicians to discuss with students the impact of illegal downloading. The musicians work with the students as they write their own songs, and highlight the importance of copyright to the creative process. At Harrogate Grammar School a personal approach is pivotal to engaging the pupils with the issue. In Year 9 students define the different roles within the music industry, and pupils take part in a discussion about the effect of illegal downloading on songwriters in the class. In Year 8 music teacher Andy Goldsmith asks students to imagine they are in a band, and they learn how to protect their own work through copyright.
