선형대수는 수(number)의 체계와 논리의 전개방법 등 수학적인 개념을 이용하여 연관된 공학문제의 해결방법 등을 찾고자 하는 과목이다. 수학적인 측면에서는 기본적인 기하학의 개념을 비롯하여, 수의 체계, vector space의 개념을 다룬다. 이러한 논리체계의 연장선 상에서, 일반적인 vector space와 함수 vector space를 소개하여 현대 수학의 기본적인 발전방향을 이해하도록 한다. 수학적인 논리와 해결방법들이 공학문제를 해결하기 위하여 어떻게 사용되는지를 공부하고, 이들 공학문제를 수학적 관점에서 체계화 하는 방법을 공부한다. 마지막으로, 선형대수에서 나타나는 여러 문제를 수치적으로 해결하는 방법을 배운다. 이러한 수치적인 검증과정은 MATLAB 프로그램을 사용하도록 한다.
